Higher sample rate for WAV files

Currently VLC support for WAV files are limited. If I play 384kHz WAV files, I get the following error;

"main error: excessive audio sample frequency (384000)"

Isn't it time to support higher sample frequencies such as 384k, 768k, even 1536k for WAV files? These days, most DACs support up to 768kHz, some even 1536kHz. At the moment it seems only WAV files can support such sample rates.
